Today, change is constant and it is part of our everyday life. Globalisation and technology play important parts in the operation of the complex environment we live in. Especially now where we are facing the COVID-19 pandemic that has shifted our regular ways of life into the “new normal” as we all call it.
The haziness of reality allows us to either grow or sink if we fail to adapt rapidly. Like the highway photo above, nothing is no longer linear or straightforward. The world today is described to be VUCA. VUCA stands for Volatile Uncertain Complex Ambiguous in the context we face day-to-day. There is no longer just one simple issue but there are multiple we face all at the same time and there is no certain solution anymore with a predictable outcome. There is no longer a clear rulebook that will guide you on how to operate, handle your personnel nor deal with your market. It is up to us managers to understand VUCA in order to create strategies moving forward.
So what to do to not end up like the boss figure of Tim Elliot? In terms of…
Volatility - be agile to enable adaptive capacity and creativity to attain stability
Uncertainty - clarify your goal and try to know everything you fully can to optimise a strategy
Complexity - complexity is inevitable. Thus, be resilient and rapidly obtain control and lead your organization in this situation
Ambiguity - be open to more than one solution. Understand the context, accept and be open to different perspectives and be open to interconnections.
Don’t just be a horse who has a narrow perspective. Ensure you are open, agile and willing to CO-EVOLVE and strive for stability in this VUCA world.
Simply remember:
Stay Tuned & Stay Hungry
